Canada’s prime minister is warning people about the “scary” Omicron variant that is spreading through the country as the Health Minister urges Canadians with plans to travel abroad to “cancel their trips.” Justin Trudeau’s government stopped short of a full ban on people leaving the country, although trips abroad are heavily discouraged.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos recently made a public statement on Omicron variant, telling Canadians: “the situation abroad is already dire in many places and it’s going to get worse very quickly, so we’re afraid for what could happen to them if they leave Canada.” Prime Minister Trudeau stated earlier in the week, “this Omicron variant is scary, and it’s the last thing anyone needs, to have to worry, again, about another wave.”

One person slammed Trudeau online for his position on the new variant, stating, “[Trudeau] said the exact same thing last winter. We can’t be doing this every winter. We need to start treating this like an endemic, because frankly, it’s never going away.” Dr. Anthony Fauci previously stated that Americans are “going to have to start living” with the virus as “we’re not going to eradicate” it.

Contrary to online reports, at least one person in the UK has died with the Omicron coronavirus variant, according to the British Prime Minister. Boris Johnson has been encouraging the people of England to get their booster shots. Reports suggest that Omicron now represents approximately 20% of cases in England.

It is unclear if the Trudeau government will impose even tougher restrictions as the Omicron variant continues to spread.
