A picture purporting to show Justin Trudeau wearing a tiger or “Tigger” costume and Spider-Man underwear has gone viral, but is it real? No, it’s a forgery.
On May 24, a Twitter user shared a picture of what appears to be Justin Trudeau wearing a “Tigger” hood. Tigger is a character from Winnie the Pooh. At first glance, the image appears to be genuine.
However, the photo is a forgery; it is not genuine. Trudeau’s face was edited onto someone else’s picture. The original source of the picture is unknown, but a reverse image search places the image as far back as 2008.
The picture has turned into a meme over the years. Jake Paul, a YouTuber and novice boxer, found his face edited onto the picture, as have several other people.
The picture was reposted again in late May in an apparent attempt to smear Trudeau. It is not clear whether the Twitter user produced this forgery themselves, or took it from somewhere else.
The original poster of the Trudeau forgery was contacted about the picture being fake. To date, the poster has not removed the picture or issued a clarification.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story incorrectly attributed the original photo to Jake Paul. Further research reveals that picture was also a forgery, and the original predates that version by over a decade. Read more about our editorial standards.
