Trudeau bans guns? Here’s what you need to know

In the wake of another deadly school shooting in the United States, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government want to ban more guns, according to gun rights advocates.

Marco Mendicino, Canada’s Federal Public Safety Minister, is bringing in new firearms legislation on Monday, according to Justice Minister David Lametti.

This announcement has gun rights advocates sounding the alarm, fearing Trudeau may try to snatch the few weapons Canadians still have access to legally.

The Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) announced that Trudeau is “hinting” at further restrictions. Others are worried that Trudeau will go as far as confiscating people’s guns.

In response to the Nova Scotia massacre in 2020, the Trudeau government banned 1,500 types of assault rifles. Bill Blair, Canada’s Safety Minister said the ban was necessary to “save Canadian lives.”

Earlier this month, an 18-year-old fatally shot 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. This shooting prompted calls for more gun control in the United States, as well as better access to mental health support.
