The lead contender for the Conservative Party of Canada states that he supports the planned peaceful protests for Canada Day.
Pierre Poilievre, currently a sitting MP, announced Tuesday that he encourages Canadians to continue protesting “government attacks” on personal freedoms.
Another “Freedom Convoy” is expected to roll into Ottawa just before Jul. 1, despite the fact Ottawa Police have announced it won’t allow a repeat of what happened in February.
However, the police force did acknowledge that “the right to lawful and peaceful demonstrations will always be protected.” Ottawa Police state its number one concern is public safety.
A news and information account belonging to the “Canada Day Convoy” announced early this morning that it had spoken to Pierre Poilievre, and that he plans on meeting the protesters in Ottawa on Canada Day.
Poilievre later denied speaking to the group in a statement to Global News. However, he maintains that he supports “all Canadians who peacefully stand up for their rights in protesting the Liberal Government’s vaccine vendetta.”
While the mandates have mostly been lifted, Canadians affected by the mandates are looking for compensation. The Canada Day Convoy states that it wants the remaining restrictions to be dropped.
The Canada Day Convoy and other groups have stated that they plan on being “peaceful,” and do not plan or encourage any type of violence or illegal activity.
This claim was met with skepticism from hard-left Twitter trolls that insist without evidence that the “Canada Day Convoy” is actually a planned insurrection.
It is notable that Parliament will not be in session while the protest occurs, and the group has not threatened to use violence. It also states it will not tolerate any sort of bad behaviour, and offenders will be reported to the police.
