A Conservative blogger joins the overwhelming majority of Canadians that support Ukraine in its battle against Russia.
Spencer Fernando, publisher of a popular right-leaning blog, has taken those that side with Putin to task for their position.
80% of Canadians would like to see Ukraine prevail in the war against Russia, according to a recent Leger poll. Only 3% support Russia, and 17% choose neither side.
Hence, actual support for Russia in the war is extremely small in Canada. Most Canadians support Ukraine.
Despite this, Fernando has received an overwhelming amount of blowback for his public support of Ukraine.
Many tweets by Fernando showing support for Ukraine have been ratio’d by Twitter users, including a recent tweet with a Ukrainian flag.
When asked by Toronto 99 staff about the reasons for him taking this position, Fernando responded:
“Supporting Ukraine is the pro-freedom, pro-democracy position. They are fighting for the principles we profess to value here in Canada, and we shouldn’t let partisanship get in the way of recognizing that reality.”
Fernando is not alone in supporting Ukraine against Russia’s illegal war of aggression. Conservative bloggers Wyatt Claypool and Daniel Bordman of the National Telegraph have taken similar positions.
The war in Ukraine has been raging on for a year today, with 10s of 1,000s of people killed.
To shape public opinion of the invasion, the Russian government has disseminated massive amounts of propaganda and disinformation, some of it being echoed by right-wing influencers in North America.
