The City of Calgary has announced that it is offering its people a watered-down celebration this year, one that doesn’t involve fireworks.
Residents that choose to light their own fireworks must receive a permit, and failure to do so can result in a $100,000 fine plus a potential 6 months in prison.
If a person has previously been caught, the penalties are more severe: up to $500,000 in fines and up to 1 year in prison.
On top of that, the city will be working to “mitigate” late-night traffic and will be using tax-payer resources to reduce “noise.”
The city will be focused on “diverse, educational, and inclusive programming,” for this year’s July 1 event, according to local media.
What the City of Calgary means by “diverse” programing is not immediately clear, but it signals that the city is focused on providing residents with a woke experience instead of the usual Canada Day festivities.
