A left-leaning Member of Parliament has been called out by Twitter for spreading fake news on his political opponents.
Ryan Turnbull, Liberal MP representing the Whitby riding, has been caught red-handed spreading fake news about his political opponent Pierre Poilievre.
Turnbull falsely claimed that CPC leader and prime minister hopeful Poilievre refuses to get a security clearance.
“Either he prefers to remain ignorant of the facts so he can continue to mislead, or he has a red flag in his background which would have him fail to gain clearance causing him embarrassment,” Turnbull wrote on Twitter.
Twitter was quick to call the MP out, stating that Poilievre has already cleared a series of background checks while serving under former prime minister Stephen Harper.
As of the time of writing, Turnbull has refused to delete the tweet (archived here), and the disinformation is still present to any of the naive people that choose to scroll through his Twitter feed.
This is not the first time a Liberal MP has spread false information about Pierre Poilievre. MP Mark Gerretsen was similarly caught red-handed spreading fake news about his political rival.
Unlike Turnbull, Gerretsen corrected his mistake and admitted that he was in the wrong.
