Don Cherry’s disgraced former sidekick continues to be the object of many Canadians’ ire.
Ron Maclean is trending on Twitter Sunday afternoon as conservatives and sports fans across the country demand he resign from Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) and remove himself from the public sphere.
Maclean is best known for failing to defend his long-time friend Don Cherry from the woke mob after he advocated for wearing poppies on Remembrance Day.
Cherry was fired after making an impassioned speech about wearing poppies during a broadcast in 2019:
βYou people that come here β¦ whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy.β
Cherry stated in an interview that he’s no longer friends with Maclean after the incident.
Angry Cherry fans took their voices to Twitter, where they expressed their displeasure at the fact Maclean still has a spot on television. One frustrated Canadian wrote:
“How the fuck does Ron Maclean keep popping up on our Saturday night TV screens. This idiot has been making people yawn since the 80s when Don Cherry wanted to strangle him on live TV on a weekly basis. Everybody would wait every Saturday to see if Don would actually punch him.”
Another upset Twitter user took things a bit farther, “I would buy Ron Maclean a bud light just so I could bottle him in the head with it.”
The Canadian Democracy Coalition launched a petition back in January to have Ron Maclean fired. At the time of writing it has just below 800 signatures.
