A new poll indicates that support for an independent Alberta is still popular.
22% of Albertans agree with the concept of the province of Alberta becoming its own country, according to a recent poll by Research Co.
While the majority of Albertans disapprove of the idea, just under a million people in the province favour separation.
The province of Alberta has 4,371,000 people, according to StatCan. Provided the poll results are accurate, 961,620 people in the province would support the idea.
Alberta premier Danielle Smith has been careful not to directly advocate for separation, but has hinted at the possibility if talks with the federal government fall through.
Smith has vowed to protect Alberta’s natural resource industry from the Trudeau government, which seeks to cap emissions to comply with his controversial green agenda.
