‘Racist’ Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett will not seek re-election

The outgoing MP was infamous for sending a racist text to an Indigenous politician in 2021.

Carolyn Bennett, MP for the Toronto riding of St. Paul’s, has announced she will not be seeking re-election, according to local media.

Bennett has been described as a “racist” and “misogynist” for a text message she sent Jody Wilson-Raybould in 2021.

Even the left-wing Toronto Star felt the need to call her out. Journalist Raisa Patel of the publication’s Ottawa bureau slammed Bennett in an article on the matter:

Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett has apologized to Jody Wilson-Raybould after sending her a text message suggesting that Wilson-Raybould doesn’t want a federal election because it would imperil her pension — a charge the Indigenous MP described as “racist” and “misogynistic.”

Bennett was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997. She will continue serving as the Mental Health and Addictions Minister under Justin Trudeau until the next election.
