The Canadian government continues to face lawsuits filed by Canadians impacted by discriminatory mandates.
The Attorney General of Canada and the Minister of Transportation have been hit with a second lawsuit in relation to vaccine mandates that limited people’s ability to travel during the pandemic.
Shaun Rickard and Karl Harrison, the two plaintiffs in the lawsuit, claim that the Liberal government’s vaccine policies prevented them from exercising their constitutionally-protected right to travel.
While the lawsuit seeks $1 million in damages, plaintiff Rickard stated in an X (Twitter) post that the purpose of the lawsuit is not to seek monetary gain.
“[The purpose of the lawsuit is] solely about ensuring that the Canadian government could never implement or invoke such tyrannical and unconstitutional mandates on Canadian citizens ever again,” wrote Rickard on X.
The lawsuit comes on the same day a lawsuit against the Province of British Columbia was announced by a group of public sector employees, as was reported by Toronto 99.
Despite the fact most mandates have been dropped by federal, provincial, and municipal governments, many Canadians are still recovering from the damages inflicted by these policies during the pandemic.
The Freedom Convoy in 2022 lead to different levels of government reconsidering their stance on vaccine mandates and other pandemic-era restrictions, such as masking and social distancing.
Tamara Lich and several other alleged organizers of the Freedom Convoy were charged with criminal offences in relation to the protest that shook Canada’s capital city and earned international media attention.
That trial is still ongoing, with defence lawyers making their case in an Ottawa courtroom. Lich has plead not guilty, and her lawyers maintain that she did not break the law, as was reported by local media.
