Germany begins media crackdown, sparking fears in Canada

Will Justin Trudeau use ‘hate speech’ laws to censor media outlets that report negatively on him?

The German government has banned a right-leaning news organization, Compact Magazine, as authorities raid properties linked to the publication in four German states.

German political party AfD slammed the move, calling it a “serious blow to press freedom.” Free speech advocate and X (Twitter) owner Elon Musk similarly condemned the move.

Compact Magazine was previously censored by Facebook and Instagram for alleged ‘hate speech’ violations, as was reported by DW News.

The move has re-ignited fears that the Canadian federal government, lead by the increasingly unpopular Justin Trudeau, will use new hate speech laws to similarly silence and intimidate independent media outlets that are critical of his leadership.

The new Canadian hate speech laws can send offenders to prison for life for hurtful speech, as was previously reported by Toronto 99.
