Since the Justin Trudeau government passed legislation in 2016 that legalized medical assistance in dying (MAID), the use of the practice has skyrocketed.
Canada’s MAID program is now the fasting growing in the world, according to a report from Cardus, a Canadian think tank.
“Assisted dying was clearly not meant by the courts to become a normal way of dying… despite judges’ and policymakers’ claims or expectations, MAID is no longer an option of last resort,” stated the report by Cardus.
Conservative MPs have raised issues with the program. Michelle Ferreri told the House of Commons about a disabled man that considered MAID to escape the cost of living crisis created by the Trudeau government.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has similarly raised issues with the practice. While not moving to ban to practice outright, he promises to ban the use of MAID for people with mental illnesses if elected in 2025.
