Danielle Smith defends decision to meet with Ben Shapiro

Alberta’s premier refuses to back down on her attempts to advocate against tariffs.

Alberta premier Danielle Smith is moving forward with plans to meet with conservative podcaster Ben Shapiro later this week.

Smith plans on sharing a stage with Shapiro for a fundraiser for conservative group PragerU. The purpose of the trip is to persuade Republicans, including Donald Trump, to walk back on tariffs.

Shapiro has previously stated on his podcast that he believes Trump’s tariffs on Canada are nonsensical, and that Trump’s actions as of late are only helping the Liberal Party remain in power.

Alberta NDP leader Christina Gray referred to Shapiro as a “racist Islamophobe” in the Alberta legislature as she condemned Smith for her plans.

Smith has spent the last three months advocating for economic co-operation between Canada and the United States, meeting with Republican lawmakers and business executives.

Smith also had a meeting at Trump’s residence in Florida, prior to his inauguration. Reports suggest that Smith’s advocacy played a part in Trump’s decision to delay tariffs on Canada earlier this year.
