Following the City of Calgary’s lead, the City of Vancouver has cancelled Canada Day.
Attacks on Canadian traditions and holidays continue as the Port Authority in Vancouver has decided to permanently cancel the pre-pandemic Canada Day celebrations, as reported by several media outlets.
Furthermore, the Port Authority has decided to stop using the name “Canada Day” altogether. It now refers to the event as “Canada Together.”
Speaking to the media, Port Authority spokesperson Alex Munro stated:
“We decided last year to take our July 1 event at Canada Place in a new direction, following national conversations about how to best celebrate Canada Day in light of the tragic findings at residential schools.
The event was re-named Canada Together and is planned collaboratively with representatives from the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations under the theme of ‘weaving together the fabric of a nation.’”
This is part of a troubling trend. The City of Calgary has cancelled Canada Day fireworks, drawing the ire of conservatives.
A petition has been launched to save Canada Day in Calgary, but mayor Jyoti Gondek remains defiant.
Instead of listening to the conservatives and the patriotic Canadians that reside in Calgary, she has chosen to double down, threatening to sic police on people if they host private fireworks parties.
The City of Toronto tried to cancel Canada Day fireworks at City Hall (Nathan Phillips Square), but reversed course after pressure from conservatives and a petition from the Canadian Democracy Coalition.
