The Canadian prime minister once “joked” about bribing the media. But his soon-to-be-unemployed propagandists aren’t laughing with him.
The Toronto Star, described as a “commie rag” by critics, is faced with impending financial ruin as its parent company Nordstar files for bankruptcy protection.
Over 70 local newspapers and over 600 jobs will be cut as Nordstar looks to restructure its “news” operations, citing unsustainable financial losses.
While the Toronto Star will continue to operate, both online and in print, Nordstar executives have hinted that that publication may also meet the same fate as some of its smaller publications.
“The media industry continues to face existential challenges,” Nordstar executives explained in a statement provided to the media.
This is not the first time the Toronto Star has faced financially difficulties. The left-wing rag, along with several other mainstream media outlets, have been relying on generous taxpayer bail-outs provided by Trudeau.
Recently, Nordstar tried to merge with Postmedia, however the move was abandoned. Postmedia is the parent company behind several CINO rags including the Toronto Sun and the National Post.
The bail-outs have lead to widespread feelings of distrust amongst Canadians, who feel that Trudeau expects positive coverage in exchange for the money.
To add to the confusion, Trudeau even “joked” about the bail-outs, saying he gave struggling media outlets money as part of an effort to buy positive coverage.
