Left-wing mayors across Alberta want to seize people’s plastic straws. Not on Danielle Smith’s watch.
Danielle Smith, the recently elected premier of Alberta, is pushing back against bylaws in Edmonton and Calgary that aim to restrict customers’ use of plastic straws and grocery bags.
A “single-use items bylaw” came into effect in Calgary in mid-January, forcing customers to pay for reusable bags. Customers will only be provided single-use utensils upon request, as was reported by local media.
Smith wasted no time in pushing back against the bylaw, telling the media: “I think we have to have policies that put people first. Some of these policies are really just putting ideology ahead of common sense.”
The premier believes left-wing mayors in cities like Edmonton and Calgary are going a “step too far.” A recent poll published on Smith’s X (Twitter) page indicates that a majority of her followers agree with her position.
Smith has long been at odds with left-wing politicians pushing “progressive” green initiatives, including those in Ottawa taking orders from Justin Trudeau.
Previously, the premier slammed Liberal MP Steven Guilbeault for trying to meddle with Alberta’s energy sector. This move was applauded by conservatives across the country.
