The LGBT community in Alberta has declared war on conservatives.
Conservatives, including premier Danielle Smith and her United Conservative Party (UCP), have been banned from attending Gay Pride events in the province.
“You may not join our celebrations in June when you plan to attack us in September. Queer rights should not be a political decision. Trans rights are human rights,” stated advocacy group Queer Citizens United YYC in a news release.
Premier Smith has previously shown support for Gay Pride, stating in 2023 that “everyone deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and respected in our province.”
However, Smith’s support was not enough for the advocacy group, which decided to go ahead and ban Smith along with other conservatives anyway.
This follows a Canada-wide trend of Gay Pride organizers banning conservatives from their events. Regina Pride has banned conservatives in Saskatchewan from attending their yearly celebrations, as was reported by the Regina Leader-Post.
“Pride parades have lost their meaning, especially when they can ban certain groups from attending (like Toronto Police). It also doesn’t help that the TQ+ movement has hijacked what started out as support for LGB people,” wrote one concerned Canadian on X (Twitter).
