Majority of Canadians concerned with assisted dying program

Canada’s MAiD program raises concerns about access to health care for vulnerable people.

The Justin Trudeau government made waves worldwide when it legalized assisted suicide in Canada back in 2016.

However, Canadians by-and-large are increasingly concerned with the Liberal government’s medical assistance in dying (MAiD) program.

62% of Canadians say they worry about “socially and financially vulnerable” Canadians looking to MAiD in lieu of adequate and quality health care, according to a recent survey by Angus Reid and Cardus.

The concerns come as an increasingly high number of Canadians have difficulty accessing adequate mental and physical health care support.

The survey results align with what Canadians say about the program on social media.

It’s become a deadly treatment in most vulnerable people, this should be a solution for end of life when there’s no life left,” wrote conservative influencer Julie Jolie on X (Twitter) in response to Toronto 99‘s request for feedback.

The problem is the government offers very little help mentally or physically in those who are in desperate need.”

These concerns have been echoed by Conservative MPs, that are currently calling for the Trudeau government not to expand the program. One notable example is MP Randy Hoback.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has been critical of the program, but has stopped short of vowing to stop the program completely once elected prime minister.
