While the details are murky, Ottawa may soon see a return of the Freedom Convoy.
Canadians, upset with Justin Trudeau‘s refusal to hold an early election, are headed to Ottawa for a repeat of the Freedom Convoy protests.
While the exact details are still unconfirmed, numerous accounts on X (Twitter) are floating the idea of a repeat of the mass protests held in Canada’s capital back in 2022.
Leading the charge is an anonymous X account @govt_corrupt. The account slammed Trudeau for suspending Parliament as something a “dictator would do.”
We’re calling for the end of prorogation so a vote of non confidence can be tabled.”
In addition, another anonymous X account @treasonconvoy purports to be the “official” news page for the proposed protest.
The hashtag #Convoy2025 was seen trending on and off on X Friday, signaling significant support for the proposed protest.
Trudeau announced that he plans on resigning as prime minister on Monday, however he will remain in charge of the country until the Liberal Party finds a new leader.
Parliament in Canada is officially suspended until Mar. 24, according to the state broadcaster. This comes as US President-Elect Donald Trump vows to impose crippling tariffs on Canada.
The original Freedom Convoy was held 3 years ago, as people from all over Canada came to Ottawa to protest vaccine mandates and Covid-era restrictions.
The mostly peaceful protest ended after the Trudeau government invoked the Emergencies Act. A judge later found this move to be “unconstitutional.”
One of the lead organizers, Tamara Lich, was arrested for her role in organizing the protest. Her trial is still ongoing, with the verdict set to be announced in March.
While the news of Trudeau’s planned resignation was met with praise by many Canadians, many people are upset that he suspended Parliament instead of calling an early election.
The Conservative Party (CPC), lead by Pierre Poilievre, has continuously dominated the polls over the last two years, as has been reported extensively by Toronto 99.
The CPC is polling at 47%, according to a recent poll by Abacus Data. This is more than the Liberals and the NDP combined.
If an election were held today, it is almost guaranteed that the CPC would decimate Trudeau’s Liberals and form a supermajority.
