Liberals under fire for election trickery

The left has been caught resorting to dirty tricks to sway the upcoming federal election in their favour.

The Liberal Party, lead by Mark Carney, is under fire after two of its staffers were caught bragging about engaging in a disinformation campaign meant to sway away voters away from the Conservative Party.

The plan involved making fake pins with messages such as “stop the steal,” and planting them at a conservative conference.

They would have gotten away with it, too. Except the staffers were overheard bragging about the scheme at a bar within earshot of a journalist.

The scheme has been dubbed “buttongate” by journalist Bryan Passifiume of the National Post. When asked about the scheme, the Liberal Party tried to play it off as a joke.

Liberal Party statement to the media

Buttongate appeared to be an attempt to make a false connection between Pierre Poilievre‘s Conservative Party and Donald Trump’s Republican Party.

Trump infamously claimed he won the 2020 election, eventually inciting an insurrection on the US Capitol at the beginning of the next year.

Trump’s statements about annexing Canada since winning the last presidential election have been incredibly unpopular with Canadians, as was previously reported by Toronto 99.

The Liberals have made resistance to Trump one of the cornerstones of their election platform as Canada heads into another federal election.

While Poilievre has distanced himself from Trump in recent months, Liberals are still trying to use the perception that Poilievre is beholden to Trump as a competitive advantage.

News of the scheme was criticized by conservatives and centrists alike, with Robyn Urback of the Globe and Mail calling the Liberals’ justifications a “caricature of Liberal arrogance.”

When asked by reporters about the incident on Monday, Carney said the actions of staffers was “completely unacceptable.”
