A Durham Police officer expressed support Monday for a truck convoy that is heading across Canada and moving towards the capital, and was immediately placed under investigation by her employer. The move has been slammed by some as being similar to oppressive governments such as North Korea.

Const. Erin Howard of the Durham Police is currently under investigation after she posted a Twitter video in support of a large truck convoy heading to Ottawa in order to “take Canada back.” In the video, she refers to truckers as “heroes,” and says she plans to speak at the event. After somebody snitched her out to her seniors, she was placed under investigation, which was confirmed by a tweet put out by Durham Police: “We were made aware today of a video circulating on social media from one of our uniformed members regarding the Freedom Rally. The views expressed in that video do not reflect the views and opinions of DRPS. We are currently looking into this matter.”
The move was slammed on Twitter, where users jumped in to show support for Const. Erin Howard, and to condemn her employer’s harsh stance. One person compared the situation to the authoritarian regime of North Korea.
Unlike the Toronto Police Service, police in Durham are not required to be vaccinated, according to local news. The service simply encourages vaccination, self-screening and regular testing for unvaccinated officers and staff as opposed to mandatory vaccinations. There has been a high level of support from police officers for anti-mandate protests. Police officers have taken a hands-off approach to protests of this nature happening across the country. Some police officers were seen protesting against vaccine mandates outside the Ontario Legislature in 2021.
