Thousands of Torontonians took to the streets on Sunday to protest Russia’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine. People marched through downtown Toronto to City Hall carrying Ukrainian flags and placards to demand the government do more to help in the conflict. Russian troops are currently closing in on Kyiv, with a high number of causalities recorded on both sides.
People across the world, including in Russia, are demanding an end to the war in Ukraine. On Sunday, thousands of Torontonians marched from Dundas Square in downtown Toronto and ended up at City Hall aka Nathan Phillips Square. Demands from protesters included establishing a no-fly zone in Ukraine and banning Russian state media outlet RT in Canada. This comes as the Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez stated he is “looking at all options” in regards to concerns with RT being broadcasted in the country. The EU has moved to ban RT and Sputnik altogether, however it isn’t clear how the ban will be implemented.
The body count continues to rise as Russian troops continue their advance on Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv. Tensions are increasing as Vladimir Putin orders Russian nuclear forces to be on high alert, a move that has worried Western officials. The West has responded to Russian aggression by imposing tough economic sanctions, kicking Russia out of the SWIFT payment system.
